SHEPAUG VALLEY RAIL ROAD

The Shepaug Valley Railroad and the Roxbury Station opened on January 1st 1872. The line ran from the county seat in Litchfield all the way to New York City. It was a single track line, but at our property it divided to be able to load cigars from what is now the Distillery and take on passengers and other freight from the Station. Just north of here both granite and steel was taken on from a spur line into Mine Hill. The railroad went out of business and the tracks were pulled up in 1948. Today, you can follow the railroad bed through the Mine Hill Preserve and then make a short connection to continue into the Steep Rock Land Trust all the way into Washington Depot.
